Top Tips - Assembling Flat Pack Furniture
Assembling flat pack furniture can be a DIYers nightmare! However, it doesn't have to be, follow our top tips below and you'll be admiring your DIY effort in no time at all.
1. First you need to carefully unwrap the package, use a Stanley knife or scissors. Use the packaging as a floor covering to protect your floor and the unit from being damaged.
TIP: If you are assembling a large item, make sure you have plenty of space to construct it and somebody on hand to help you build it. Make sure the room is well ventilated by opening a window, as patience can decrease as the room temperature increases.
2. Check the information leaflet as this will usually list all the fixtures and fittings you need. Double check that you have all of them before you start building. Also it is worth putting them altogether in a container so that they don't get lost. Check that there is no damage to the unit parts before assembling.
3. Make sure you examine the diagram in the instructions thoroughly and read all the information from start to finish. It is tempting to dismiss this information - we're all guilty of it but it will in the long run save you a lot of time and stress if it's done correctly first time around.
4. Make sure you use the right sized screws in the right places often it is an easy mistake to make.
5. Battery operated drills can help speed up the process of construction, it needs to be set on a low speed with a low torque setting as screws can easily be driven through chipboard etc by mistake.
TIP: tighten up the last couple of turns of screws and bolts with a screwdriver or small spanner, as you can judge when they are ‘tight' much better by hand.
6. That's it you're finished! You shouldnow have a fab fully constructed piece of furniture if everything has gone to plan. Don't worry if it didn't turn out prefectly the first time round, keep practising as the more you do the better you will get. Just follow these simple steps and you'll be a DIY god or goddess in no time at all.
